What is Metal Stamping Mold?
Metal Stamping Mold is a special tool consisting of many parts and components assembled into a combination to perform one or more processes on suitable equipment to produce one or more parts with the required shapes and dimensions by making the material plastically deformable like bending, pressing, stamping... or destructively deforming like cutting...
What is Stamping Die?
Stamping die is a type of tool used in stamping processing. It is used to shape products from thin metal sheets in a cold state under the action of pressure.
Structure of stamping die:
- Upper Die (Punch): This is the upper part of the die, attached to the hammer, moving up and down to create pressure on the blank.
- Lower Die (Die): This is the lower part of the die, fixedly held.
Classification of Stamping Dies
Based on the type of stamping, there are 2 types of dies:
- Cutting Die: This type of die is used for cutting metal to perform punching and cutting operations.
- Forming Die: This type of die is used to change the shape of the blank without removing any material from the blank.
Based on the stamping method:
- Simple Stamping Die
- Component Stamping Die
- Compound Stamping Die
- Progressive Stamping Die
Materials for Stamping Dies
The material for making stamping dies affects the quality and life of the die. The types of steel commonly used to make stamping dies are:
- SKS3: Hardness after quenching is very stable, cutting and bending performance is very good. Minimize deformation of the mold after quenching.
- SKS93: High Carbon Steel used for small production volume. Easy to process, oil in tempering is easy to quench.
- SKD11: Stamping die steel with high wear resistance at normal temperature. Good toughness and lowest residual stress for high hardness and surface quality, while limiting warpage during machining.
- DC53: Very good wear resistance. Very little deformation after heat treatment. Good machinability and better welding properties than SKD11.
Quality standards for stamping die processing:
- Stamping die processing must ensure high corrosion resistance.
- The die must have appropriate hardness and toughness for the die function (For example: Stamping dies have lower hardness than punching dies).
- Die material must be compatible with the material of the stamped product and the production volume.
- Ensure lubrication regime when stamping.
Mechanical requirements of the die: durability, hardness, wear resistance are the determining characteristics of the die, increasing the life of the die.
